Less Is Bore: Genz's Love For Maximalism

Updated: Oct 27, 2022

Simple, plain, lucid, or stark, cold, boring? The idea of minimalism differs between millennials and GenZ. The idea of minimalism decor dates back to the 20th century as a reaction to wrought classical details and traditional decor.

One of the first to embrace minimalism is Mies van der Rohe. However, the new generation is not in favor of minimalism anymore. The trend is pushing away from once-reigning Van's aphorism, "less is more" to "less is boring". GenZ is currently dominating media, finance choices, fashion, and also interior design.

According to them when you go for a minimalist choice, you cage yourself in limited choices, when you can be fluid and creative by adding everything that reflects your style. As the name suggests maximalism is about maximizing everything, from shades, and textures which are reflected through furniture, DIY wall accents, and creative wall cladding. As per Ms.Pink of Quirk and Rescue, you can never have too much of a good thing.

So, how can you bring maximalism decor to the interior without creating a callous in your home? Well, you can take inspiration from some Instagram pages, or follow some tips that I will share along the blog.

Amp Up The Energy In Living Room

During the pandemic, when we all were couped up inside the home, living was the only space, where everyone spent most of the time getting a breath of fresh air. So, if you are planning maximalism decor, start by elevating the energy of the living room.

Build a design by mixing and matching different shapes and heights of couches and armchairs to make the space comfortable and relaxing. Bold and vibrant color is the way to achieve maximalist decor, in this you can choose warm tones or layered textures.

While elevating the decor of the living room, you can plywood as material for fabricating tables and chairs of different shapes and sizes to ensure you are in charge of the design. Moreover, to keep it cohesive and not look haphazard design, you must pick a theme, layer, or color pallete which is common in your overall design.

Give The Walls a New Life

While pastel paints were the favorite among minimalist decor, the same doesn't blend well with maximalist. The walls must have textures that radiate good energy inside the home. As per the Instagram account @prettypocketprojects the murals, bold patterns, and bright hues make the home filled with excitement and energy.

You can add wallpaper, integrate plywood walls, apply textured paints or install metal aluminium panels to give the home a luxurious and interesting look.

Keep It Classic with Traditional Elements

As Gen Z is leaning towards maximalist decor, they are mostly taking inspiration from old classic designs. The Victorian or Gothic era celebrated maximalist decor as the elements of art became visually appealing qualities of decor.

So, bringing anything vintage is easy in maximalist decor. You can put vintage crafts, add wooden doors for home by using plywood as material, trumpet lights and old-school brass telephone to tell a story through decor.

Conclusion

The trailing epoch of millennial minimalism is carried by Gen Z's eco-conscious maximalism. In maximalism decor, they are inclined towards sustainability. Rather than filling the homes with sustainable designs, they create a DIY design that motivates a new wave of being eco-conscious. Using materials like plywood or ACP sheets to elevate the decor is a way to create a huge impact on society. Since maximalism has no rule book, they go by creating a style that never goes out of trend.
